Civil disputes

Civil disputes can arise from many situations and can fall under almost all areas of UK law, involving individuals, companies, local authorities or Government departments. Often these disputes are resolved under civil litigation, by which a court decides whether a wrongful action has been committed and what should be a fair consequence as compensation. There are also other ways to find a resolution for claims and disputes, called alternative dispute resolution, which do not involve the courts and are a more informal way of finding an agreement between the two parties.
Civil disputes usually fall into two categories:
- Contractual Dispute - in which an agreement has been broken between two or more parties.
- A Civil Wrong - caused by one party to another, either deliberately or as a result of negligence.
Contractual Disputes may only involve a relatively small amount of money, such as in the case of debt recovery or a claim relating to the purchase of defective goods. However these claims can involve complicated commercial litigation and be more complex and drawn-out.
Civil Wrongs often entail claims for compensation for personal injury or damage to property or reputation.
